Kimono
Kimono Exhibition (Musée de Quai Branly 2022/2023)
One of the biggest inspirations for starting Bankrobber came from the Musée du Quai Branly in 2023, during their Kimono exhibition. Despite all the wonderful colours on display, the design and form — rooted in tradition — carried incredible restraint and formality.
The exhibition traced the kimono’s journey from a traditional garment to a global cultural icon. Those silhouettes, textiles, and forms clearly influenced Sundance Kid, and you can still trace a line to San Quentin and other pieces in our collections.
There, we discovered not only this striking poster by Nihon Buyo and Ikko Tanaka, but also many beautiful garments in black and white, which felt dramatic and fresh, even when they were hundreds of years old. And it was the beginning for us, the spark, the first design being Sundance Kid, which led inch by inch to the others you see on our site.
